Community Engagement

Collaborative Masterplanning

The concepts of ‘Community Architecture’, ‘Community Planning’ and ‘Community Consultation’ have been gradually developing and gaining acceptance since the mid-1980s, to such a degree that some form of interactive design dialogue with community representatives is now a requirement in most major planning applications. Gone are the days when ‘consultation’ meant professionals drawing up a design for a development in the comfort and isolation of their drawing offices and then exhibiting the finished product in a library or town hall for the public to comment on with feedback forms and questionnaires. Nowadays it is expected that ‘the public’, or at least ‘the stakeholders’, are actively engaged and involved in shaping the proposals at a much earlier stage in the design process, long before a finalised design is submitted for planning permission.
