Robert Adam's own home, Hampshire

Inevitably this house is an essay in Robert Adam’s own values and delight in the classical tradition. The entrance hall is relatively small, and the visitor is invited forward naturally by the light that pours into from the double-height living hall. The carved stone chimney piece provides the hearth and focus of the house and strikes a modestly aristocratic note. The kitchen and family sitting room run the full depth of the house on the west side, with carefully detailed fitted furniture in the kitchen making full use of the space, while the east side of the house is divided between a study and more formal, but still comfortable sitting room.
