Sands Gallery at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford
The Sands Gallery houses an important collection of early twentieth century paintings, sculpture and graphic art within the Ashmolean Museum. The project was funded with a National Lottery grant, and forms part of the overall Sackler Library design for the University of Oxford. The Gallery is located above the new Griffith Institute, also designed by ADAM Architecture, and houses the museums' collection of rarely displayed twentieth century art. The gallery is classically proportioned with an elegant, shallow curved ceiling. This incorporates a fabric screen, diffusing ultra-violet light and protecting the exhibits from damage. The new independent access is through a refined Etruscan doorway, emphasised with simple classical mouldings.
