For more than 20 years Poundbury, the Prince of Wales’s traditionalist housing development in Dorset, has divided opinion with some describing it as visionary, others as a “feudal Disneyland”.

Now, inspired by his approach, some big landowners are planning a series of Poundbury-style housing developments on their own country estates as part of efforts to tackle Britain’s housing crisis.

Among the schemes is a plan by the Duke of Marlborough to build up to 1,600 homes, overseen by Hugh Petter, an authority on classical architecture. It would mean Woodstock, a small market town in the shadow of Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, would more than double in size.
