George Saumarez Smith recently led a Drawing Tour in Edinburgh for the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA), a non-profit membership organisation committed to promoting and preserving the practice, understanding, and appreciation of classical design. The tour mainly focused on Greek Revival buildings from the early 19thCentury, particularly focusing on work by Thomas Hamilton and William Playfair. Participants of the course, which ran from 30th May to 4th June 2022, received tuition in measured drawing, single point perspective, pen and ink wash drawings and watercolour painting.
Reflecting on the course, George said, “It was wonderful to spend a week drawing in different parts of Edinburgh with such an enthusiastic and talented group, and to see the city at its absolute best. It reminds me of the value of taking the time to study buildings by drawing them, and in some case measuring them too.”
