This substantial Grade II listed village house, dating back to the 17th century with significant 18th century modifications and extensions, suffered severe fire damage. The first and attic floors were completely destroyed, and as the fire was extinguished, the water damage destroyed much of the ground floor. During the course of the works the modern cement render was replaced with a new lime render that is ruled to look like ashlar masonry, and a new Bath Stone Neoclassical porch was added, so transforming the arrival to the house. The architectural challenge was to rescue an historic house, recapturing the important detail and character, without losing the essential patina that the owners so cherished. At the same time there was an opportunity to make modest adjustments to adapt the layout of the house to modern patterns of living. Through careful understanding of materials and historic details, as well as a close team of builders, engineers, loss adjustors and architects working with the client; this house, like a phoenix, has risen from the ashes.
