New modern classical house
Virginia Water, Surrey
Ockenden Park is a new modern classical house that sits comfortably within the 40-acre estate. A long, elegant driveway is marked at the entrance with a pair of gate lodges which are square plan form and in keeping with the local vernacular of Virginia Water. The striking neo-classical, 32,515 sq ft country house displays simple, elegant composition, and first-class detailing on the main entrance façade with ornamental pediment, decorative tympanum and a grand porte-cochère for vehicle passage. On both sides of the main façade, framing the main house as the central axis, is a round belvedere to create symmetry and visual interest.
Internally, the house has a statement galleried entrance hall and large well-proportioned rooms. The accommodation includes five grand reception rooms, family kitchen and living room, separate pantry and servery, and guest bedroom suites. The east wing is a large orangery style function/ballroom with cocktail bar and the west wing providing garaging. A striking balcony from the principle bedroom overlooks the garden on the rear façade of the house. The split-level of the site creates a semi-exposed basement which houses health, leisure, and entertainment facilities. A number of follies and eye-catchers placed within the estate draw the house and the landscape together. Work by the skilled landscape team, Richard Miers Garden Design, have helped perfectly position the house into the site
Robbie comments, “This site is truly remarkable and offered us the rare opportunity to create a new modern home which is of a scale that befits its generous and secluded setting. Our focus has been to create a family home which combines the timeless classical architecture principles with the traditional spaces associated with the English Country House and impressive interiors adapted for modern living.
