Country Houses

Many of our clients are motivated by the opportunity to contribute to the evolving tradition of the English country house.

Any new country house is a descendant of a rich and varied tradition. Christopher Hussey, writing in 1951, thought the country house was ‘England’s most characteristic visible contribution to the richness of European civilization’, and something of that significance lay not just in its architecture but also in its relationship to the landscape. This is still our first consideration when designing a new country house.

Of course, modern country houses are often smaller than their predecessors, and most require a more flexible arrangement of formal and informal spaces. Technology has also advanced significantly, and we prove time and again that sustainability and traditional design are not mutually exclusive, integrating decarbonising solutions within our designs, rather than bolting them on.
