New Altar for The Sacred Heart Chapel at St Aloysius Church, Oxford

The new altar in The Sacred Heart Chapel, to the north of the church of St Aloysius in Oxford, replaced a previous timber altar and reredos which was in poor physical condition.   The brief was for the new altar to allow for the celebration of Mass, for the occasional reservation of the Blessed Sacrament when required and for the relocation of the statue of the Sacred Heart.  The altar is built of limestone and coloured marbles from Ireland, Italy and Portugal. The design is in the Restrained Baroque style associated with the Roman churches of the counter-reformation. The facade of the Romas Oratory Church, the Chiesa Nuova, was a particular inspiration.
