Refurbishment & alteration of a Grade II listed cottage
Applications for planning and Listed Building Consent have been approved for the sensitive restoration and extensions to a Grade II listed mid-19th century red brick traditional Mill House in Surrey, on the outskirts of Guildford.
Currently in a poor state of repair but retaining many original features, the historic fabric is to be sensitively preserved whilst new interventions of modern services and connections to renewable energy supplies will carry the building into the 21st century and meet the clients’ aspirations to provide a comfortable and low carbon home for the future. A new rear wing has been traditionally designed adopting local materials with modern construction, providing opportunity to adapt interior layouts to meet the demands and ambitions of current owners.
The design shows that conservation and decarbonisation of our existing building stock are very much aligned. A fabric first approach has been promoted from the very outset, enhancing and protecting the significance of the heritage asset, and ensuing its energy efficiency will be dramatically improved through the introduction of new breathable insulation and replacement double glazed sash windows incorporating restoration glazing. Decisions around local materials and procurement will contribute to a “whole house” approach, illustrating that historic retrofit can become more commonplace within our built environment.
Planning permission granted July 2022.
