Nansledan awarded the ICAA Gindroz Award
We are delighted to announce that Nansledan, Newquay in Cornwall, has received the 2025 Gindroz Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing from the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) in America.
The award is named after Ray Gindroz, founder of Urban Design Associates, who has dedicated his whole career to promoting better social housing and more integrated communities across America and the wider world.
The Gindroz Award recognises excellence in the design and implementation of affordable housing in the classical tradition. The judges consider the unique challenges of designing and building high-quality affordable housing, project contexts, community engagement, social impact, and commitment to building neighbourhoods for all.
Nansledan was recognised for its deep commitment to meet local needs by providing high-quality, affordable housing that is integrated seamlessly with the wider community. Locally sourced, low-carbon natural materials have been used to create a new walkable urban environment that is distinctive, promotes low-carbon living, and provides access to high-quality green space and amenities. It is a 540-acre extension to the city of Newquay, located on Cornwall’s north coast. Led and managed by the Duchy of Cornwall and inspired by HM King Charles III’s vision for English urban development, Nansledan is a sustainable mixed-use community comprising walkable neighbourhoods with homes, shops, offices, schools, restaurants, and recreation.
Hugh Petter remarked, "I, along with the whole Nansledan team, am thrilled that Nansledan has received the Gindroz Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing. This recognition celebrates both the vision of the Duchy of Cornwall as our client and the collaboration and dedication of the whole project team. We are all deeply committed to creating integrated, sustainable places where it is possible to live a healthy, happy life, and that are beautiful and enduring. Nansledan demonstrates that strategic masterplanning, long-term stewardship, and an understanding of local needs and local identity can lead to vibrant, sustainable and popular communities reinforced by social and economic sustainability and low carbon lifestyles. We may hope that the endorsement of Nansledan through this award will help us all to encourage others to embrace these principles to help tackle some of the profound housing issues of our time that sadly challenge every nation."
Nansledan will be presented formally to the ICAA community at a dedicated Gindroz Symposium, hosted by the ICAA, in New York, on the 8th November. Speakers will include ADAM Director Hugh Petter, The Duchy of Cornwall, Cornwall Council, and The King's Foundation.
This award acknowledges the meticulous collaboration of these parties with the wider developer team. We are indebted to the ICAA for this recognition and extend our profound thanks to all who have contributed to the making of Nansledan.
