Hugh Petter, Partner

Hugh Petter is an acclaimed architect and urban designer specialising in traditional and classical design. His portfolio includes new country homes, historic restoration, commercial projects, master-planning and consultancy, in Britain and overseas.

He is guided by a philosophy of tradition as an evolving phenomenon and classicism as a living language. He looks to the past to build sustainably for the future and create lasting communities rooted in a sense of place.

For more than a decade, Hugh has led the team behind Nansledan, an exemplary urban scheme in Newquay for the Duchy of Cornwall. In 2025, the scheme was recognised with the Gindroz Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing.

Hugh studied at Portsmouth and in Rome, before first joining an early iteration of ADAM Architecture in 1987. His subsequent tenure at the firm has been punctuated with teaching at the Prince of Wales’s Institute of Architecture and the University of Notre Dame, and work to revive the Art Workers’ Guild.

Hugh’s work has been internationally recognised with several awards, most recently the 2025 Arthur Ross Award for Architecture from the ICAA.

He is a member of the RIBA Traditional Architecture Group, INTBAU and the Georgian Group, a Fellow of the RSA, and an elected brother of the Art Workers’ Guild.

In 2023, Triglyph Books published Living Tradition, exploring Hugh’s architectural career, authored by Clive Aslet with a foreword by HRH The Former Prince of Wales.
