Grade II House, Hertfordshire

The reinstatement of a family home after decades as a hotel and golf club.

This Grade II-listed Georgian country house was built in 1773. It has been extensively remodelled, restored and reinstated as a family home having been at various times a school, a country club and, most recently, a hotel and golf club.

Modern wings have been removed, with older parts retained to ensure the bulk of the house is orientated around the courtyard, as originally intended. The internal layout has been restored, with the return of the entrance to its original position. Many of the original features have been restored.

The additions respect the existing fabric: a new wing reflects a 19th century gardener’s lodge on the estate, while existing barns and stables have been replaced with new, including a stable court in brick and timber boarding which respects the architectural language of the local vernacular.

Landscaping works include the addition of a pool and alterations to the existing boundary walls and garden pavilions, as well as the realignment of the access road and new gates and piers.

The golf clubhouse has been relocated in a new building on a different site, also designed by ADAM Architecture.
