About the Travel Scholarship

The ADAM Architecture Travel Scholarship provides an opportunity for students or recent graduates to travel abroad to conduct research on an architectural subject of their choosing. The award of £2,000 supports original research in architecture, architectural technology and urban design.

Judges look for a significant piece of original research work which can provide an outstanding contribution to architectural knowledge. Applicants with all stylistic interests are encouraged, from contemporary to traditional architecture and everything in between.

How to apply

Who can apply:

The scholarship is open to students enrolled at a UK or International University or School of Architecture, studying RIBA Part I, and up to 3 years after their Part II qualification, to students studying a CIAT accredited degree or post-graduate course, or equivalent qualification.

First launched in 2005, the scholarship has a proven track record of supporting students to travel overseas to further develop their current research interest or to kick-start something new, often outside of their studies. Previous winners have travelled to Valletta, Japan, Cuba, France, Belgium, Sicily, Rome, Iran and Ethiopia.

Many past recipients have been invited to present their research at a public event hosted by ADAM Architecture.

The judging panel will include partners and directors at ADAM Architecture, plus others invited external judges from business or academia.

The application requires:

A portfolio of work with up to 20 images/pages, A4 or A3 size only, pdf up to 10Mb via email.

A short CV.

Additional information and conditions

Entries must be received at ADAM Architecture’s office by the deadline. A shortlist of entries will be compiled by members of the judging panel. The partners at ADAM Architecture reserve the right to change the panel of judges if circumstances require. Students shortlisted to receive the travel scholarship will be required to attend an interview to present their research proposal to the panel of judges. This will be in our Winchester or London office, or via webcam if student lives outside the UK. The date for interviews will be announced shortly, and you should make every effort to be available on this day. The overall winner will be chosen by the panel of judges following the interviews.

The prize of £2,000 will be made in two equal payments. The first payment at time the scholarship is awarded and a second payment on presentation of the research. If the award is given to a student outside the UK, the prize of £2,000 will be converted into their local currency.

The individual who is awarded the scholarship must be prepared to present his or her work in person to the partners, other members of ADAM Architecture and selected people within the architectural profession, as decided by ADAM Architecture.

This presentation may take place in London or Winchester and the winner will be expected to make their own travel arrangements. Any requests for assistance with expenses must be sent to Sue Beaumont before any bookings are confirmed.

The research should be a significant piece of original work. Sources must be identified and referenced to acknowledge intellectual debt to the authors and support specific facts. There is to be no subsequent change to the title or scope of the project as presented at the interview, unless discussed with the partners.

The completed project is to be presented in the agreed format and within the agreed timeframe. It is recognised that occasionally modifications may become necessary, but these are not to be made without the prior agreement of ADAM Architecture. ADAM Architecture will have joint copyright of the research report and reserve the right to publish it in whole or in part.

Proof of travel arrangements and adequate insurance cover for travel and health is required. ADAM Architecture will take no responsibility for travel or other administrative arrangements which are to be made by the chosen student. ADAM Architecture accepts no liability in respect of the personal safety of the winner or any other outcome that may result from the award of this scholarship.

The winner agrees to be available for media interviews should these be appropriate and for their name and images to be made available to and published in the media.
